Aqueous ethanol permeation across Sterlitech flat sheet aquaporin membranes
نویسندگان
چکیده
Aquaporin (Aqp) embedded membranes have become a topic of recent research due to the superior selectivity of Aqp to water and its acceptable flux. Most researchers have utilized Aqp membranes for water purification purposes such as reverse and forward osmosis desalination of sea and brackish water and wastewater treatment. This paper investigated the permeation of aqueous ethanol across commercial aquaporin membranes for possible applications in ethanol dehydration in the process and biofuel refining industries. The study revealed that rather than being selectively rejected, ethanol was able to diffuse through the membrane with minimal changes in composition from feed to permeate, even at low feed concentrations of ethanol. The total flux across the membranes were shown to average 3.86 liters/mh (LMH). The presence of ethanol increased the relative rate of water transport across the membrane. When comparing total flux of pure water to aqueous ethanol solutions, the flux was higher for solutions containing any ethanol.

Glycerin Removal from Ultrafiltration Flat Sheet Membranes by Filtration and Soaking
comIn the case of pharmaceutical processes, the presence of preservatives can be problematic and the quantity is subject to stringent standards. So, the aim of this study is to quantify the removal of glycerin contained in ultrafiltration flat sheet membranes by filtration and soaking. This is carried out over a wide range of membranes with different characteristics. The selected flat sheet mem...
متن کاملWater permeation across biological membranes: mechanism and dynamics of aquaporin-1 and GlpF.
"Real time" molecular dynamics simulations of water permeation through human aquaporin-1 (AQP1) and the bacterial glycerol facilitator GlpF are presented. We obtained time-resolved, atomic-resolution models of the permeation mechanism across these highly selective membrane channels. Both proteins act as two-stage filters: Conserved fingerprint [asparagine-proline-alanine (NPA)] motifs form a se...
متن کاملDoes CO2 permeate through aquaporin-1?
Aquaporins facilitate water permeation across biological membranes. Additionally, glycerol and other small neutral solutes are permeated by related aquaglyceroporins. The role of aquaporins in gas permeation has been a long-standing and controversially discussed issue. We present an extensive set of atomistic molecular dynamics simulations that address the question of CO(2) permeation through h...
متن کاملSynthesis and characterization of novel nanocomposite Chitosan membranes for Ethanol dehydration
Polyacrylonitril (PAN)-supported chitosan (CS) nanocomposite membranes were prepared by cross-linking the CS with 3-aminopropyl-triethoxysilane (APTEOS) via sol-gel method. Pervaporative performances of the CS-SiO2/PAN membrane for dehydration of aqueous alcohol solutions were investigated. From SEM cross-sectional images of the membrane, the spongy pores and the finger-like pores we...
